Scope and Content Prestonfield House, Priestfield Road, Duddingston, Edinburgh, from the west Prestonfield House, now a hotel, stands on the south side of Duddingston Loch. It was designed in the 1680s by Sir William Bruce for Sir James Dick, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, to replace an earlier house burnt down by a student demonstration in 1681. The main front of the house is to the west, with its balustraded two-storeyed centre sandwiched between two curvilinear Dutch gables. The beautifully detailed Roman Doric porte-cochère, a porch large enough to admit a carriage, was added in 1818. The estate of Prestonfield, first mentioned in historical records in 1153, passed to the Hamilton family, one of whom 'fell at Flodden' in 1513. In 1677 the lands were bought by James Dick, a wealthy merchant and Lord Provost of the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
