Scope and Content Ian Hill's House, No 42 The Causeway, Duddingston, Edinburgh The Causeway, Duddingston's main street, is a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep Heid Inn. Ian Hill's House, an 18th-century rubble-built house, stands on the north side of the street. Next door, on the corner where the lane makes a sharp turn south, are two late 18th-century weavers' cottages, recently harled and converted into one house. Duddingston was, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a busy weaving community, with around 40 village looms working to produce a coarse linen cloth called 'Duddingston hardings'.
