Scope and Content Detail of the roof and crowstepped gable, the Dovecot, Malleny House, Currie, Edinburgh Malleny House, built for the Scott family in the first half of the 17th century, incorporates an earlier building dating from the 16th century. The house and gardens now belong to the National Trust for Scotland. The dovecot, possibly associated with the 16th-century house, is built in a traditional 17th-century Scottish style with crowstepped gables, and a slated dormer window which provided the entrance for the birds. Crowsteps are squared stones which form step-like projections on the sloping sides of a gable. They were common in Scottish architecture in the 16th and 17th centuries, and are often referred to as 'corbie-steps' from the French 'corbie' or crow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
