Scope and Content The Dovecot at Malleny House, Currie, Edinburgh, from the west Malleny House, built for the Scott family in the first half of the 18th century, incorporates an earlier building dating from the 16th century. The house and gardens now belong to The northational Trust for Scotland. The dovecot, possibly associated with the earlier house, has a double-pitch slate roof and crowstepped gables. It was lined with 915 nest boxes, and has a small low door on the west side for access to collect birds and eggs. In many large Scottish estates, the dovecot has survived the house, perhaps because King James I decreed it a felony to destroy a dovecot, and the traditional belief that, if a dovecot was demolished, the 'lady of the house' would die within a year.
