Scope and Content 'Sower and Harvester' stone, Aberlady churchyard, East Lothian The inscription on this stone is now illegible, and its date and dedication are unknown, though the carvings imply this to be the memorial of a farmer. Surmounting the stone, a winged cherub symbolises the soul's ascent to heaven. The figures at the bottom of the stone are the Sower (left) and the Reaper (right), a favourite of farmers in the Lothians. Between are emblems signifying death and mortality. The Sower and Harvester scene is an allusion to the Biblical quotation 'What man sowing precious seed and going forth doth mourn' as well as being a graphic allusion to farming life.
