Scope and Content Front face, gravestone commemorating James and Margaret Toter, Bolton churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates James and Margaret Toter, children of Thomas Toter, a local wright. The inscription records that James died in 1700 aged 13, and his sister Margaret in 1699 aged 3. Above the inscription is a carving of a woman, presumably the children's mother, holding a bone in one hand and a skull in the other, both signifying death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
