Scope and Content Reverse face, gravestone commemorating William Lamb, Bolton churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates William Lamb, who died in 1724. Unfortunately the decoration and inscription are partially obscured by damage to the stone. Symbolising the soul's ascent to heaven, the winged cherub resembles a renaissance putto. To the right is what appears to be a slater's hammer, suggesting this was William's trade in life. Beneath, the skull and crossbones symbolise death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
