Scope and Content Reverse face, gravestone commemorating R D, Dunbar churchyard, East Lothian The inscription on this stone records only the initials R D with the date 1776. The stonemason adopted an uncommon design when carving this gravestone, creating unusual moulded edges. Within the main panel, the emblems express human mortality and death. To the left of the hourglass, symbolising mortality, are the sexton's tools for digging graves, the turf-cutter and shovel. Underneath is a skull and crossbones, signifying death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
