Scope and Content Reverse face, gravestone of James Dobbie, Humbie churchyard, East Lothian This gravestone commemorates James Dobbie, a maltman, who died in 1679. Carved within the shield are the tools of a maltman's craft, the mash-oar and firehook. Above, the skull on crossbones, a popular motif of the 17th century, signifies death whilst the hourglass represents man's mortality. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
