Scope and Content Detail of inscribed lintel above main entrance doorway of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This secondary lintel, above the original entrance to the 16th-century tower, is inscribed with neat capitals in false relief. It reads: 'IM AN BEHALD THE END BE NOCHT/ VYSER NOR THE HIESTES I HOIP IN GOD'. The initials 'I M' stand for John MacNaughton. John succeeded his father between 1593 and 1596, having married 'A N', Anna MacLean (NicIlleain) in 1587. The motto appears to mean 'Behold the end: be not wiser than the highest one is'. The final motto, 'I hope in God', is the MacNaughton family motto. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
