Scope and Content Detail of date panel on main entrance doorway of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This sandstone panel sits above the original entrance to the 16th-century tower. It has a roll-moulded lower edge and bears the date 1598 in false relief. The tower was erected by John MacNaughton or his father, Sir Alexander, in the late 16th century. This panel and other carvings around the main entrance were perhaps intended for, or reused from an earlier building, although the date 1598 is probably close to the date of the castle. It may be associated with a mason working at Gylen Castle in 1582. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
