Scope and Content Detail of window and pistol-loop on south wing of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This small window has a roll-moulded surround. Many of the windows in the tower are small, but larger windows light the main first- and second-floor apartments. Underneath the window is a pistol-loop, one of at least 25 in the tower walls. A number of pistol-loops have been reworked or inserted as part of the restoration by Lorimer (1864-1929). The loops are circular apertures, some, like this one, have been decorated with surrounding circles externally. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
