Scope and Content Detail of pedimented dormer window on east side wall of south wing at Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The dormer pediments, such as this one on the east side wall of the south wing of the tower, were mostly introduced by Lorimer (1864-1929) as part of his restoration. This pediment is carved with a smiling bearded face. Some pediments are thought to date to the 17th century, but those pediments known to be original are plain in design. This window has a roll-moulded surround. Lorimer used this type of surround for some of the windows on the new ranges flanking the tower. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
