Scope and Content Detail of ceiling in first-floor library of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The library was designed by Lorimer (1864-1929) and has a barrel-vaulted ceiling which is decorated with panelled plasterwork by Thomas Beattie (c.1861-1933). This panel is decorated with trailing vines and there is a bird to the right. Robert Lorimer was born and trained in Edinburgh, and by 1905 he was famous for his restoration work. He worked with a carefully selected group of craftsmen who produced work of outstanding quality. Lorimer was knighted in 1911. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
