Scope and Content View of first-floor hall in Dunderave Castle from west, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. The great hall, also known as the Hall of the Red Banners, occupies the full length of the main block of the 16th-century tower. The ceiling is an open-beam and boarded ceiling set on runner-beams which are supported on corbels projecting from the wall. A small number of original corbels were used as models for the corbels of the restored ceiling. Lorimer (1864-1929) and his team of craftsmen carried out alterations on the upper floors, but on the ground and first floors, few changes were made. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
