Scope and Content View of fireplace and aumbry in north wall of hall in Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This large fireplace, in the main hall of the original 16th-century tower, has a roll-moulded surround. The lintel above the fireplace has been renewed. To the far left on the inside of the fireplace, in the ingoing, is a perforated slab. On the wall to the left of the fireplace, there is an aumbry or cupboard with a restored wooden door. The aumbry would have been kept dry due to the perforated slab. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
