Scope and Content The former Morningside Station, Morningside, Edinburgh Morningside Station, on the Edinburgh Suburban and South Side Junction Railway line, was opened for passenger traffic in 1884. Much of the planning of this successful suburban line was undertaken by Thomas Bouch, designer of the ill-fated Tay Bridge. This shows the approach to the station from the west, on the line from Haymarket, Gorgie and Craiglockhart. At Morningside Road a cutting had to be made for the track, which meant that the station offices were built on the street bridge level. The construction of the suburban railway encouraged increasing numbers of people to take up residence in Morningside, a trend particularly evident in the 1930s when railway transport was at its peak, with a regular service to Waverley Station.
