Scope and Content South front of Baberton House, Juniper Green, Edinburgh Baberton House, built in 1622 for Sir James Murray, Master of Works to King James VI, stands between Juniper Green and Wester Hailes on land given to Sir James by the king. The house, privately owned until 1977, is now used as office premises. The house, which stands in nine acres of ground, was originally built as a double L-plan of three storeys which created a south-facing courtyard with stair-turrets built into the two angles. In 1775 the courtyard was filled in by a semi-octagonal bay. The house may have been used by King James VI as a hunting lodge. It was occupied by King Charles X of France when, in exile after his abdication in 1830, he sought refuge in Scotland, and a debtor's sanctuary at Holyrood Palace.
