Scope and Content View of fireplace in drawing room of Ardmarnock House, Argyll and Bute The Ardmarnock estate was created by John MacIver's purchase of several farms in 1826, and the main block of the house was probably built then. It was sold to Dr John northicol in 1852 and the north-east wing was added in 1880 by his son, Donald northicol, MP. This fireplace is in a large room in the south-west corner of the Georgian part of the house. The elaborate chimneypiece is carved from white marble. Two free-standing female terms (tapering pedestals supporting a sculptured human) support a lintel. The lintel, between the terms, is decorated with female masks and acanthus ornaments. There is a central plaque, illustrated with an allegorical story. After the Victorian addition to the house, this became the billiards room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
