Detail of RA E. face.

SC 560136

Description Detail of RA E. face.

Catalogue Number SC 560136

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ML 5490/1

Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating R J, East Calder churchyard, Midlothian This gravestone records only the initials R J and no other dates or information. Evidently this stone commemorates a miller, as a mill rind (a fitting used to hold the upper millstone in place) is pictured beneath the open book. Undoubtedly the book represents the Bible, and signifies the miller's faith in the Word of God. Leaves and greenery are a common feature of gravestones in Mid- and West Lothian, usually incised around the edges as a border. Whilst decorative, it also suggests themes of regeneration and renewal as well as expressing the hope of Paradise. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
