Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating George Wright, Cramond churchyard, Edinburgh This gravestone commemorates George Wright, a farmer, who died in 1741 aged 33. A particular favourite of Lothian farmers, the figures of the Sower (left) and the Reaper (right) flank the cartouche. Below the inscription are emblems of death and mortality, including the arrow-pierced heart, signifying life's end on earth. The figures of the Sower and the Reaper is a metaphor for the Biblical quotation 'What man sowing precious seed and going forth doth mourn' as well as being a graphic allusion to the farming life.
