Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating the Society of Coach Drivers, Canongate churchyard, Edinburgh This highly unusual memorial was erected for the Society of Coachdrivers by Thomas Cameron and Robert northewning, Society Treasurer, in 1765. Emblems of death and mortality fill the stone's pediment. A skull and single femur signify death, whilst the scroll above is inscribed 'MEMENTO MORI' ('Remember You Must Die'). Beneath the inscription is a portrayal of a coach crossing a bridge. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
