Scope and Content Bridgend Woollen Mill, Isle of Islay, Argyll This small water-powered woollen mill was built to replace a smaller mill on an adjacent site, the building of which still survived in 1998. Thi one was an integrated mill, taking raw wool and turning out tweeds and blankets. This view shows part of the piecing machine, a rare survival from c1860. Strips of carded fibre in the trays to the left were joined together with strips already removed, by the rollers in the centre and wound on to the reel on the right. The continuous slivers of carded fibre from the piecing machine had the woollen fibres running at right angles to the length of the fibre. This meant that the yarn spun from this sliver was hairy, and good for making blankets and rough tweeds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
