Scope and Content View of west façade of Kilmory Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. Joseph Gordon Davis, an architect from London, remodelled and extended the house between 1828 and 1836. The west, or principal, front which he designed is seven bays wide. It is divided horizontally by narrow projecting stone bands, or string-courses. The front has small octagonal turrets which rise above the flat parapet. The central block is flanked by large towers. In 1837, when the house was finished it was described as 'almost entirely rebuilt...in the Old English style'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
