Scope and Content View of the Old Rectory from the south-east, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who inherited the title in 1743, initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray to a new site 0.6km to the south. A plan for the new town was drawn up in 1744 by the duke and Lord Milton (1692-1766). The Old Rectory in Inveraray was probably designed and built by James Peddie, a mason and contractor from Leith. The house corresponds to a drawing submitted by him in 1816. Built of hewn coursed masonry, the two-storeyed house has three bays. There is an ashlar band at the same level as the cornice above the door. The door is flanked by pilasters, shallow rectangular columns which project slightly from the wall, in an Ionic style. The roof is slated with ashlar skews at the gable-ends. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
