Scope and Content Detail of cornice in drawing room of Old Rectory, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The Old Rectory in Inveraray was probably designed and built by James Peddie, a mason and contractor from Leith. The house corresponds to a drawing submitted by him in 1816. Built of hewn coursed masonry, the two-storeyed house has three bays. This plaster cornice in the principal ground-floor room is original. It is decorated with a vine-scroll motif. Below the vine-scroll is the leaf and dart pattern, followed by the egg and dart motif. The hall on the ground floor also has original cornices. The house was occupied from 1848 to 1886 by Scipio MacTaggart, Sheriff-Clerk of Argyll and Provost of Inveraray. From 1886 until 1952 it was occupied by the priest in charge of All Saints' Episcopal Church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
