Scope and Content View of Dunderave Castle from the west, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) designed his additions to harmonise with the original tower. To the right is the one-and-a-half storeyed south range. The north range, which is similar, is to the left. The original tower-house lies between the ranges. The tower is linked to the later wing by a columned loggia, or gallery. There are stone forestairs which lead from the garden up to the loggia. The gable-end is crowstepped. The walls of both the tower and the later ranges are built from local rubble. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
