Scope and Content View of Castle Toward from the south-east, Argyll and Bute Castle Toward was built in two stages. The original house was erected in 1820 for Kirkman Finlay, a wealthy Glasgow merchant. In 1920-4 the west section of the house was added for Andrew Coats, a member of the Paisley thread-making family. The east section of the house (right) was designed by the Glasgow architect David Hamilton (1768-1843) in 1820, although changes were made at a later date. It was designed in a Gothic castellated style and built of white sandstone. The alterations of the 1920s involved the construction of a large three-storeyed western block (left) which matched the castellated details of the earlier building. The architect was Francis Deas (1862-1951) of London. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
