Scope and Content Detail of rainwater head at Minard Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. This rainwater head, although it has an early date of 1775 on it (the house was built in 1784), may represent the original house of Knockbuy. It shows a house with sash windows and a crenellated parapet. Rainwater heads are box-shaped metal structures, usually made of lead or cast iron, in which water from the gutter or parapet is collected and then discharged into a downpipe. As in this case, they may be elaborately decorated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
