Scope and Content View of porte-cochère at Minard Castle from south, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. This two-storeyed porte-cochère projects from the principal façade of Minard Castle. It has three four-centred archways set between square corner turrets. Behind the porte-cochère is a tower with a corbelled and crenellated parapet. Four-centred arches were common in Gothic architecture. They are formed from four arcs, two of which describe arcs from the springing point and two of which describe arcs below that level. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
