Scope and Content View of first-floor stair landing in Minard Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. Rochead was also responsible for the interior of Minard Castle, which was even more Gothic in style than the exterior. The dog-leg stair is made of oak and its balustrade is carved to form an open-traceried grid of dagger-like motifs. The balustrade closes the gap between the shafts of the central arch, before returning along a gallery (right) which leads to the first-floor drawing room in the south-west tower. The ceiling is panelled and decorated with cusped tracery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
