Scope and Content View of first-floor drawing room in Minard Castle from south, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. Rochead was also responsible for the interior of Minard Castle, which was even more Gothic in style than the exterior. The main feature of this first-floor drawing room is the elaborate wooden panelled ceiling decorated with cusped tracery. The fireplace also has cusped decoration. Dark wood, such as that of the door to the left, was very popular for Gothic-style interiors. If the wood was not dark naturally, it would be painted and stained to make it look old.
