Scope and Content View of vaulted ceiling in entrance-hall of Minard Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1784 Archibald Campbell (1693-1790) had a plain Georgian house, known as Knockbuy, built. In 1842, the estate was sold to H W Askew. He employed the architect, John Thomas Rochead (1814-78), to alter and extend the house, renaming it Minard Castle. Rochead was also responsible for the interior of Minard Castle, which was even more Gothic in style than the exterior. This plaster ceiling in the entrance-hall is composed of ribbed vaults with circular ornaments at the intersections, known as bosses. The use of ribs to decorate flat ceilings was a feature of the Gothic style. To the left, are stone arches leading to the staircase hall. This has a dark high ceiling, which contrasts with the low, light entrance-hall ceiling. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
