Scope and Content General view of watchman's stone at Barbreck's Well, Argyll and Bute This stone is thought to have been erected by Archibald Campbell of Barbreck in 1714. He had succeeded his father by 1691 and was deprived of the estate in 1732. The family is said to have moved to Kintyre. Situated in a wooded valley east of the Lochgilphead-Oban road at Barbreck, this stone stands at the head of a well marked by a stone-slabbed cistern. It was recorded in 1833 at a site in Kilkerran but was restored to its original position after 1910. The inscribed headstone is made of red sandstone and is set into a concrete base. The stone has a gableted top and the front face is carved with a round human head, wearing a wig. The rear of the stone is dated 1714 and says 'This al by Barbreck'.
