Scope and Content View of east archway on driveway at Kilmory Castle from the east, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. This is the driveway along the north side of the house which linked the house with the court of offices, or home farm. To the right is a high wall which goes along the side of the driveway. The driveway is spanned by two archways and a bridge. In the foreground is the east archway which is ornamented with narrow slits. Behind this is the bridge and finally the west archway, which is crenellated. It is likely the driveway was constructed in this form around 1860-78. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
