Scope and Content View of staircase at first-floor level in Kilmory Castle, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. This open-well timber stair in the octagonal staircase hall was described by Sir John Orde as 'much admired'. The balustrades and the central, or newel, post are carved with grape and cartouche motifs, an example of Italian workmanship. Some features described by Sir John Orde in 1844 still remain, although the building has not been a private home since 1949. Also, many changes were made internally after a fire in 1983.
