Scope and Content View of south-west corner apartment in Kilmory Castle from north-west, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. This is the ground floor in the octagonal south-west tower of the principal facade designed by Joseph Gordon Davis in 1828-36. Each floor consisted of one room. Originally, this was a dining room and the floor above was the drawing room. Due to change of use of the building and due to a fire in 1984, the interior of the castle has been altered. However, there are still some features from the time of Sir John Orde which survive, including this ceiling with radial decorated plaster ribs. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
