Scope and Content General view of Strachur House from the south-west, Argyll and Bute Strachur House, a provincial Classical house, was built by General John Campbell to replace an earlier residence at Succothmore, and was at first known as Strachur Park. It appears to date from the 1780s and was first assessed for window tax in 1785. This is the principal entrance to the house. It has an advanced centrepiece 6.7m wide. This single-storeyed round-ended entrance porch, dating to the early 20th century, replaced a square Classical porch which probably dated to the early 19th century. The main block of the house is three-storeyed and has a hipped roof with two chimney-stacks. The two-storeyed flanking wings have mansard roofs. The single-storeyed wing (right) dates to the early 20th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
