Scope and Content Ornamental bridge at Strachur House, Argyll and Bute Strachur House, a provincial Classical house, was built by General John Campbell to replace an earlier residence at Succothmore, and was at first known as Strachur Park. It appears to date from the 1780s and was first assessed for window tax in 1785. This ornamental bridge spans a small stream between the house and the court of offices (right). The arch, composed of rusticated voussoirs, is surmounted by a square hood-mould which is repeated in blind half-arches in the abutments to the right and left. The arch springs from the roofs of the pedimented aedicules, or niches, which contain plain doorways and are surmounted by small urns. The aedicules were probably privies which discharged into the stream. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
