Scope and Content View of Inverneill House, also known as 'The Cottage', prior to demolition, Argyll and Bute The estate of Inverneill was acquired in 1773 for Sir Archibald Campbell who was on active military service in Madras. In 1791 Archibald's brother, Sir James Campbell, inherited the estate and his descendants owned it until 1954. This house, described in 1840 as 'The Cottage', was probably built before the death of Sir James Campbell in 1805. It is two-storeyed and has four bays. The bay at the left end is projecting and is round-fronted with a hipped roof. The windows in the left bay are tripartite. The house was described in 1840 as containing a dining room, a drawing room, and eight bedrooms. It was demolished in 1955. The building to the right is the present Inverneill House, which was built in 1890. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
