Scope and Content General view of Relief Land, Main Street South, Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The building of new Inveraray was a complex process which lasted over 30 years. The 5th Duke of Argyll, who inherited the title in 1770, oversaw much of the building of the new town and the demolition of the old town. Robert Mylne (1734-1811) was the architect responsible for much of the design of the town. Relief Land was built to Mylne's designs by John Brown, a mason, in 1775-6. It was designed to house 'workmen, and others of the low people'. An austere three-storeyed block, it is divided into five, each division having a narrow central pend, or passage. The ground floor was divided into a two-room dwelling on either side of the pend. The upper floors were single flats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
