Scope and Content View of south courtyard at Kilmory Castle from the west, Argyll and Bute In 1816, Kilmory Castle, which had 18th-century origins, consisted of a rectangular house with a central wing. This was incorporated into a Tudor Gothic mansion built for Sir John Powlett Orde between 1828 and 1836, which was again extended in 1860-78. By 1837 the house was L-shaped in plan. By 1878, due to the later additions, it was U-shaped in plan. Matching two-storeyed blocks were built to the north and south of the rear courtyard. Their gabled ends have oriels, or bay windows in the upper floors. The oriel window to the right is crenellated. The building on the left incorporates an earlier single-storeyed building. It has an entrance archway which has been infilled at a later date. There is an entrance archway to the courtyard. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
