Scope and Content View of study in Strachur House, Argyll and Bute Strachur House, a provincial Classical house, was built by General John Campbell to replace an earlier residence at Succothmore, and was at first known as Strachur Park. It appears to date from the 1780s and was first assessed for window tax in 1785. The study was described in 1792 as 'a drawing room, having three large windows'. It has a curved end wall as it occupies the central bow on the north-east front of the house. It corresponds in layout to the dining room below. The chimneypiece has jambs, lintel, and a frieze of yellow veined marble and a cornice of white and grey marble, with an inner metal surround decorated with swags. The fireplace may date to the early 20th century, along with the fitted bookcases. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
