Description Strachur House Interior - view of dining room china cabinet

Date 1989

Catalogue Number B 15516

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Scope and Content China cabinet in dining room of Strachur House, Argyll and Bute Strachur House, a provincial Classical house, was built by General John Campbell to replace an earlier residence at Succothmore, and was at first known as Strachur Park. It appears to date from the 1780s and was first assessed for window tax in 1785. The dining-room walls are covered with a hand-painted Chinese wallpaper of 18th-century type which is decorated with flowering shrubs, butterflies, birds and cages. On the south-east wall is a china cabinet with fretwork glazing bars of Chinese style. European imitations or evocations of Chinese art became very popular in Britain, Germany, France and Italy in the 18th century, having first appeared in Europe during the 17th century.
