Scope and Content Titan cantilever crane, North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This crane is an example of a type developed by Sir William Arrol and Co Ltd, to handle very heavy pieces of machinery. In it a steel tower supported a turntable on which revolved a cantilever jib with a travelling hoist, and a counterbalance. This view shows the steel tower, and the cantilever jib, with the counterbalance and control room to the right, and the hoist with its dangling hook to the left. The turntable is on the flat top of the tower. The North British Diesel Engine Works was the first in Britain built to construct marine Diesel engines, originally under licence from Burmeister and Wain of Copenhagen. This crane was built to install engines in ships moored at the adjacent quay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
