Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556466

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content New Bridge, Musselburgh, Midlothian This five-span masonry bridge was designed by John Rennie in 1806, and widened in 1924 to designs by Blyth and Blyth, Edinburgh civil engineers, retaining the Rennie elevations. The arches are segmental, and remarkably flat. This view shows the bridge from the south west. It width as rebuilt in 1924 can be judged by the placing of the lamp-standards. The arch rings, spandrels and parapets are of massive polished ashlar, and the cutwaters are rounded, with shallow niches above The 1924 rebuilding was designed to accommodate electric trams, and also motor traffic on what was then part of the A1 trunk road to England.
