Edinburgh, Newhaven Harbour General View

SC 556464

Description Edinburgh, Newhaven Harbour General View

Date 20/9/1979

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 556464

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Newhaven Harbour, Edinburgh This harbour was in existence in the 16th century, but was much rebuilt and extended in the 19th century. The west breakwater pier was built in 1864, and the east pier was extended in 1876, when the present lighthouse was constructed. This view shows the east pier, with its lighthouse, in the right background, and the end of the 1864 west breakwater in the left breakwater. The fishing vessel in the right foreground is a typical Newhaven inshore craft. Newhaven harbour is now primarily a motor yacht haven, and the former fish market now contains a local history museum. The lighthouse, constructed of cast-iron sections, is one of the finest of its kind in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
