Scope and Content Former beam engine house, Grangepans, Bo'ness This building was probably built to house a Newcomen engine pumping out of a pit at its west end. The purpose of the arched openings in the sides is obscure. After it was abandoned it was adapted as a dovecot. This view shows the engine-house from the north west, with the circular wall round the mine-shaft to the right. The upper part of the building was substantially modified when it was converted into a dovecot. This is one of a small group of surviving Newcomen engine-houses in Scotland, the others being at Saltcoats, Caprington (Kilmarnock) and possibly at Kilmux, Kennoway.
