Scope and Content Abbey Bridge, Paisley, Renfrewshire This bridge was built to replace a masonry structure too narrow for Paisleys developing traffic. It was built with wrought-iron plate girders, but dressed up with cast-iron panels to suit its situation beside Paisley Abbey. This view shows the centrepiece of the parapet of one of the spans, displaying the arms of the Corporation of Paisley, who paid for the structure. The quality of both design and execution is remarkable. The contractors for this bridge were Hanna, Donald and Wilson, Paisley's most important firm of structural engineers. It was later widened, retaining the cast-iron cladding. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
