Scope and Content Abbey Bridge, Paisley, Renfrewshire This bridge was built to replace a masonry structure too narrow for Paisleys developing traffic. It was built with wrought-iron plate girders, but dressed up with cast-iron panels to suit its situation beside Paisley Abbey. This view shows the bridge from the south west, showing the slenderness of the central pier, possible in this form of construction. The elaboration of the architectural treatment is unusual. The contractors for this bridge were Hanna, Donald and Wilson, Paisley's most important firm of structural engineers. It was later widened, retaining the cast-iron cladding.
